Cadburys, over the past few years, have been making a name for themselves in the advertising world with their new surreal and elaborate TV campaigns. I am sure you can all remember the drum-playing gorilla? Their most recent TV advert for the Flake chocolate bar is no exception, it shows an elaborate, beautiful display of billowing fabric emanating from a floating dress made from 200 metres of material, representing the delicacy and fragility of the folds in the flake bar in the colour of the packaging of the famous chocolate.
Despite this captivating display, the quirky and beautiful new advert seems to be causing some controversy - not due to the elaborate nature of the ad this time - but due to the fact that this striking haute couture vision bares more than a passing resemblance to a previous video produced and created by the very same director just 5 years prior to this (watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cou04-vOZx8).
Film and music director, Baillie Walsh previously created a very similar video in 2005, that was used for Alexander McQueen's backdrop to his Fall 2006 runway show. The original video that was commissioned by the Gucci Group (who owns Alexander McQueens fashion house) shows Kate Moss almost floating and rotating wearing billowing folds of a large Alexander McQueen runway dress. The new Cadbury's advert depicts a very similar theme – only this time featuring Russian model Yulia Lobova and a dress by Anthony Price.
Despite the ongoing debate as to whether this is plagiarism or just laziness (on Baillie's part), I still think that the new TV advert for Cadburys is fascinating and achieves its goal of captivating the viewer’s attention even after several views. Love it.
I guess, the question still remains – what will the Gucci Group say...??
