When the World Cup came around we decided it was time for the obligatory office sweepstake. Rich, the studio’s sports (and gambling) nut, was in charge and was official adjudicator of the draw. It was decided that the winner would get £20, runner up £10 and, shaking things up a little, we decided that the team who conceded the most goals in the group stages would win the booby prize of £2.
Rich collected the money and then, under very strict conditions, allowed each person to pick 2 teams. You could have cut the tension with a spoon.
There were mixed emotions from the liquid team. Rick was relatively chuffed after he drew out England (how little he knew!) while Karen also thought she was in with a shout picking France (if only she knew that they had a manager who picked players based on their star sign and that the team would end up refusing to even train for him).
Others who thought they were in with a chance were Danny who got Brazil, Steve (Argentina) and Minnie (Italy). Alison wasn’t best pleased to draw Holland and Slovakia – as you can guess she is now much happier with one of those choices.
However, it was Lindsey (perhaps drawing on the experience of her starring role in Golden Balls) who was the BIG winner, not only picking out the now World Champions Spain but also winning the booby prize thanks to North Korea’s 7-0 defeat to Portugal.
Cath Kidston can look forward to £22 in its till soon!
